1st Mitcham Scout Group has a strong focus on STEM activities, to inspire and enhance learning.

Most of our leaders hold STEM professions, namely in the fields of science, engineering, medicine, and educators.

Whether it's building rockets, making a escape room, running steam engines, cultivating worm farms, exploring chemistry, investigating computers, bat watching, frog call identification, and many other though provoking activities, 1st Mitcham Scout Group embraces STEM within our program.

Virtual Reality World

Stepping into an alternative world, virtual reality allowed these Joey and Cub Scouts experience the potential of computing.

Finding the Pobblebonk Frog

Using their mobile phones and a frog sound app, Joey Scouts undertook a census on the number of Pobblebonk Frogs in Yarran Dheran Nature Reserve.

Robots that Demolish

Building and coding robotics, 1st Mitcham Joey Scouts programmed their machines to crash through blocks.

Counting Bats

On banks of the Yarra River, the Cub Scouts undertook a study on the numbers of fruit bats in each tree.

Colour Chemistry

Using the principle of chromatography, Cub and Joey Scouts were thrilled as the colour from Skittles dissolved into a coloured pattern.

Fluid Dynamics

Venturer Scouts discovered the properties of fluid dynamics...in a giant hamster ball.

Lava Lamps

Joey Scouts were excited to learn how to make a Lava Lamp using oil, coloured water and Alka Seltzer.

Electronic Spark Generator

As part of this Cub Scout Special Interest Badge, this cub created a voltage converter, to spark electricity across two wires.
