Mitcham Scouts Outdoor Activities

1st Mitcham Scout's outdoor activities are dynamic, and youth lead, as one week of camp life is worth six months of classroom theory.

Our Outdoor Activities program focus on fun, resilience, team work, and learning-by-doing.

The following are examples of some of our recent outdoor activities.

Joey Scouts

Discovering our Community

Discovering the service to the community by our first responders, the Joey Scouts explored how Nunawading fire fighters protect our community.

Play with Meaning

Negotiating their way through an elastic web. Through play, Joey Scouts learn to find their way through a string maze, developing dexterity and self-control.

Learning to take a Challenge

Joey Scouts take the challenge of crossing the rope bridge at the Whitehorse Festival. In a safe and secure environment, stepping into the unknown builds resilience and self-confidence.

Cub Scouts

Cuboree

Cuboree is a massive camp over five days and four nights, held every three years for Cub Scouts. Cubs camp out with their Leaders and parent helpers, and engage in a challenging activity program plus night-time entertainment.

Canoeing

Under the direct guidance of the State Canoeing Team, cubs often enjoy paddling the calm waters of Victoria's many lakes. This builds team work and a sense of adventure.

Beach Top Day Hike

Along the well marked Beach Top path, Cub Scouts and their Leaders hiked the 5km via the coast, fostering team building, navigation skills, and responsibility in the youth.

Scouts

Mount Baw Baw Hike

Hidden around Mt Baw Baw are huts that are literarily not on the map. Supported by leaders with decades of hiking expertise, the scouts explored the Mushroom Rocks located on the Great Alpine Trail.

X-Country Ski Day

At Lake Mountain, about 1 hour from our Hall, 1st Mitcham Scouts often ski in the winter months. Supervised by qualified ski tour leaders, the scouts learn how to play and stay safe in cold weather conditions.

Indoor Rock Climbing

Located 2km from the 1st Mitcham Scout Hall, indoor rock-climbing is a favourite activity for the scouts. Fun, it is also develops trust and responsibility in the youth.

Venturer Scouts

The Cathedrals, Chill-adventure

A combined standing camp and hike, base camp hikes give teenagers the opportunity to chill with friends before challenging themselves on Mount Cathedral's rocky mountain trails.

Mount Bogong 7 Day Ski Camp

Each year, Venturer's attend a 7 Day Ski camp, staying at the Mount Bogong Rover Chalet. The jewel in the crown of scouting, Venturers and qualified ski tour leaders ski around Australia's pristine Alpine Snow fields.

ANZAC Day Dawn Service

At Halliday Park, Mitcham, the Venturers' honour those that paid the supreme sacrifice so that they can live in a free nation.
